[BUG] find-in-article: hyphen does not match non-breaking hyphen
Open, LowPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to reproduce

  1. go to article USB 3.0
  2. find in article: Type-C

Expected results

12 hits (as of 2025-12-10)

Actual results

1 hit
This is because 11 of the 12 occurrences are written with a non-breaking hyphen. This should match a hyphen (they’re visually and semantically identical), but whatever normalization is being used fails to conflate the two.

I considered making this a feature request, but on reflection I think it qualifies as a bug.

Thank you for tagging this task with good first task for Wikimedia newcomers!

Newcomers often may not be aware of things that may seem obvious to seasoned contributors, so please take a moment to reflect on how this task might look to somebody who has never contributed to Wikimedia projects.

A good first task is a self-contained, non-controversial task with a clear approach. It should be well-described with pointers to help a completely new contributor, for example it should clearly point to the codebase URL and provide clear steps to help a contributor get set up for success. We've included some guidelines at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/good_first_task/ !

Thank you for helping us drive new contributions to our projects <3

Hi, I’m Yash (Phabricator: @Yash5749).
I am a CS student preparing for GSoC 2026 and would like to work on this task.
Could you please confirm what the expected steps are and where I should start?
