Add Yoruba Language Support for UI Translation
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Description:
The application currently lacks Yoruba language support, limiting accessibility for Yoruba-speaking users primarily in Nigeria, Benin, and diaspora communities worldwide. Yoruba is a major African language with over 50 million speakers. Adding Yoruba translation will improve accessibility and user experience for this significant demographic, particularly in Nigeria where Yoruba is one of the three main languages.

Proposed Solution:

  1. Translation Implementation:
    • Create Yoruba language file (yo.json or yoruba.json) with complete translations
    • Translate all interface elements including:
      • Navigation menus and button labels
      • Form inputs, labels, and placeholders
      • Error messages, warnings, and success notifications
      • Settings options and configuration text
      • Help content and tooltips
    • Ensure accurate technical translations for SPARQL and AI terminology
    • Handle loanwords and technical terms appropriately in Yoruba context
  1. Special Character and Diacritic Support:
    • Ensure proper support for Yoruba alphabet including:
      • Tonal marks: à, è, ì, ò, ù (grave), á, é, í, ó, ú (acute)
      • Dot below characters: ẹ, ọ, ṣ
      • Nasal vowels: an, ẹn, in, ọn, un
      • Special consonants: gb, kp
    • Verify Unicode support for all Yoruba-specific characters
    • Test font compatibility and rendering of tonal marks
  1. Language Integration:
    • Add Yoruba to language selection dropdown
    • Implement proper language switching mechanism
    • Store Yoruba language preference in user settings
    • Support Left-to-Right (LTR) layout as Yoruba uses Latin script with modifications
  1. Cultural and Linguistic Considerations:
    • Consider appropriate tone and formality levels in translations
    • Adapt examples and context to be relevant to Yoruba-speaking users
    • Use culturally appropriate expressions and idioms where possible
    • Consider dialectal variations (Standard Yoruba vs regional dialects)
  1. Quality Assurance and Testing:
    • Engage native Yoruba speakers for translation review and verification
    • Test all UI components with Yoruba translations
    • Check for text overflow, especially with longer Yoruba words
    • Verify proper rendering of diacritics across different devices
    • Test on various browsers and operating systems
  1. Documentation and User Support:
    • Provide Yoruba-language help documentation
    • Create Yoruba-specific user guides or tutorials
    • Include Yoruba examples in query documentation
    • Consider adding Yoruba voice input support in future iterations

Benefits:

  • Significantly improves accessibility for millions of Yoruba speakers in Nigeria and diaspora
  • Supports educational and research initiatives in Yoruba-speaking regions
  • Demonstrates commitment to African language digital inclusion
  • Expands user base in Nigeria (Africa's largest economy and most populous country)
  • Enhances application's appeal for multilingual Nigerian users
  • Contributes to preserving and promoting Yoruba language in technology
  • Improves digital literacy and STEM accessibility for Yoruba speakers
