Revise Citoid “Automatic” tab UX to clarify text input performs a search, not a definitive lookup
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This task involves the work of proposing UX improvements to Citoid that make it clear to people typing in keyword(s) into the text box that appears within the Automatic tab that it behaves like a search experience.

Story

As someone attempting to add a reference using Citoid’s Automatic tab, I want it to be clear that the text I enter, and results that are returned to me, is functioning as a search query rather than a definitive match, so that I understand I’m being invited to evaluate and choose a citation instead of assuming the tool has identified the correct source on my behalf.

Background

At present, Citoid present people who enter keyword(s) into the text box that appears within its Automatic tab with one result.

This user experience gives people the misleading/inaccurate impression that the service is returning a definitive result rather than a guess.

As a result, people encounter issues like the one described in T382446.

Event Timeline

I'm not sure if this goes in the same ticket, but I'll also flag up another possible UI improvement that might have prevented the previous bug report, which is that the user used the "convert" button; if we displayed the old citation in the next window after using the convert button, they might have noticed they were different.
