Article Guidance entry point exploration
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

As part of Article Guidance (T396029) first intervention, we plan to help junior editors when they try to create an article. Given that the intended impact is about reducing deletion rate (T414503), the specific entry points were not defined as part of the main workflow (T414409).

This ticket is intended to explore the specific entry points that can be useful for the experiment.

Considerations:

  • Entry points proposed should work in an A/B testing context. That is, considering that half of the users using the entry point will be directed to the new feature, while the other half will be sent directly to Visual Editor (without additional guidance), the entry point should not anticipate the destination in any way. For example, we cannot show an invite to "try the new guided experience", since half of the users will get the old experience instead.
  • We should be careful increasing the volume of contributions. Enabling very prominent entry points can bring an influx of new articles: half of it with the old experience (which we know it often leads to deletion), and half to the new experience (before we have validated to which extent the proposal helps reduce low quality contributions). As a consequence, even if the proposal achieves a lower deletion rate, due to an increase of contribution volume and the effects of a/b testing, the overall number of low quality articles may actually increase.
  • Only a small set of article types will be supported. As part of the initial intervention, guidance will be provided only for a limited set of article types. We may need to consider how the entry point works under that limitation.

Initial ideas:

  • Contribute menu. The Contribute menu (T322740) is intended to list contribution activities and make them accessible from the contributions page. The option to create a new article can be a simple and persistent entry point to support.
  • Link from relevant wikiproject/campaign/event pages. On community collaborative initiatives such as wiki projects that focus on supported article types, a link to contribute can be included that works as an entry point for the experiment.
  • Invite to expand with a section after an article. For articles of a supported type, an option to expand with common sections can be shown below the article contents.
  • (feel free to suggest more ideas)
