Hi team, noting here that we are aiming to send these upgrading push emails out by March 24. Would it be possible to complete these tasks by then, @Ejegg and @ehughes?

Also @Lars I'm not sure if this task belongs on the FR-donorrelations board, since it's related to an email campaign.

NNgu-WMF set Due Date to Fri, Mar 13, 12:00 AM.Feb 9 2026, 5:32 PM

Hi @NNgu-WMF , I'm tracking these tasks in Asana, due date is no problem for me!

@NNgu-WMF Looks like DR is keeping tabs on this, so no harm in it being on their board. No harm in having additional project tags if something is relevant.

The amounts are configured by currency, rather than country, so we'd need a code change to give NL donors different EUR suggestions than donors from the other EUR countries. Is there a reason they are specifically higher for NL @ppenloglou ?

Hey @Ejegg! Thankfully we landed on amounts 1, 3 and 5 for EUR regardless of country. I'll update the Recurring Upgrade Amounts sheet to reflect that now clearly.

Currencies/amounts table (at time of writing this comment):

CurrencyAmount 1Amount 2Amount 3
USD CAD AUD NZD1510
EUR GBP135
JPY1005001000
NOK SEK1050100

Thanks @ppenloglou ! I've started plugging in the Spanish translations. I realize I need to update the date localization code, and there are a couple of things still to translate.

When you select an amount, the following confirmation text appears before the button:

"recurupgrade-upgrading-new-amount-and-date": "Your new monthly donation amount of $1 will apply on your next donation date of $2",

And if your recurring contribution has been cancelled (or you started a second recurring) since the email send, you see these messages when you click the link.

"recurupgrade-salutation-no-recur-records": "Hi! Thank you for your support to Wikipedia.",
"recurupgrade-no-recur-records": "Unfortunately, we were unable to locate a recurring donation to upgrade. You can <a href=\"$1\">start a new monthly donation</a> or contact us for support on <a href=\"mailto:$2\">$2</a>.",

Also, I notice that the translations are all of the base version of the form. We had tested a variant that had more compact text, which made the 'Upgrade now' button visible without scrolling down. Did we determine that didn't do any better? You can see it for yourself by adding &variant=v01 to any test link.

I liked the variant better because it was more clear you had to press the bottom button to make the change take effect.

Hey @TomaszGorski, want to bring Elliott's comment above to your attention regarding further translations. Is this doable?

@Ejegg wasn't aware of the short form variant!
@NNgu-WMF @MSuijkerbuijk_WMF is this something you want to explore?

Hi @ppenloglou @Ejegg,

Do we have a definitive/complete list of sentences and wording that requires a translation? Is there a deadline?

Confirming I can get them in all the languages and add them in the respective google docs Panos linked in its first comment. I've added the 3 sentences in the "Recurring Upgrade: Upgrade Landing Page" and pinged you both.

Cheers, T

Hi @TomaszGorski , the only ones missing for the base version of the form are in the comment above https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T415682#11625966 .

If @NNgu-WMF and @MSuijkerbuijk_WMF want the more compact variant we would need

"recurupgrade-thanks-increasing": "Thank you for increasing your contribution and helping to build a strong, stable future for Wikipedia and all Wikimedia knowledge projects. Together, letโ€™s spread knowledge even further.",
"recurupgrade-upgrade-decline": "No, I'll leave it as is",
"recurupgrade-upgrade-now": "Upgrade my monthly gift now",
"recurupgrade-upgrading-new-amount": "You are increasing your monthly donation amount to <strong></strong>.",

The email is due to go out in late March but folks were hoping to have the form deployed by March 12th for testing.

Hi everyone, I've got the sentences translated/proofread in Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish. French/Japanese is WIP. Will confirm once done.

Hi @TomaszGorski, I notice that volunteer translators already had all the strings for NL. Want to review these changes to make sure the new version is an improvement? https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/DonationInterface/+/1240808

It's great as it changes from formal to informal tone, which is what we use in our translations in Dutch, plus some vocabulary improvements.

Thank you @TomaszGorski for coordinating the translations! And @Ejegg for flagging the availability of the more compact variant :)

I've deployed the config for the non-USD currencies, plus the date localization and the translations for Spanish, Italian and Dutch. Will continue plugging in the rest of the translations.

Not needed for launch, but if people click the links 2 months later they will get the 'expired link' error and need to submit their email address to get a new link via email. New Phab to translate that flow: T418609: Localize expired checksum link flow

Note that the optimal translation flow in general would go through translatewiki, again to avoid any potential errors or guessing at link text when copying/pasting from Google docs (In Japanese I had to do a lot of trial translations of substrings to figure out what was supposed to be linked to start a new donation). For example, this is the link to translate all email prefs / recurring upgrade / donor portal messages to Spanish (you will need an account). The dropdown at the top right lets you select a different language:

OK, all the translations for the RecurUpgrade form have been deployed, including some code to use the last name rather than the first name in the Japanese salutation.

Please note that the language of the front end depends on adding a uselang=XX parameter to the URL in the mailing. If we need to support it automatically using the donor's preferred language from Civi when there's no uselang in the link, that would be a pretty small bit of tech work.

Also, I see a bunch of translations for the TY message in the message template admin screen!

Thanks for all the work here @Ejegg , much appreciated!

I can confirm at least from an Acoustic send that we'll be populating the uselang parameter from a contact's isolang field. I don't see an immediate need to do this from donor's preferred language.
