Define Edit Suggestion card copy for en.wiki Beta Feature release
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

In T414987, we are defining the Edit Suggestion card copy that will be sent off for translation before the deployment of the Suggestion Mode beta feature to all Wikipedias (T415320).

This task involves the incremental step of identifying what (if any) copy changes we will make to hard-coded English copy that is implemented and available here: https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmcloud.org/wiki/Special:EditChecks.

NOTE: consult 1233717 that makes it possible to preview widgets.

Proposed copy

Here is the proposed copy following the new copy structure for suggestions proposed in T414987:

Suggestion nameTitleDescriptionDone
addReferenceAdd a citationThis information has no source. Help readers understand where this information is coming from by adding a citation.
disambiguationLink to a more specific pageThis link points to a disambiguation page. Help readers find the right topic by linking to a more specific page.
duplicateLinkRemove duplicated linkThis link appears more than once in this section. Help readers navigate the article more easily by removing repeated links.
externalLinkEdit external linkExternal links should generally not appear in the body of an article. Help readers stay focused on the content by either removing this link, moving it to an “External links” section, or by converting it into a citation if appropriate.
headingLevelsAdjust heading levelThis heading level may not follow the correct sequential structure. Help readers—especially those using assistive technologies—navigate the content more easily by using the correct heading level.
imageCaptionAdd image captionThis image does not have a caption. Help readers understand why the image is relevant by adding a short caption.
textMatchChange English spellingThis word uses a different English variety than the one established in this article. Help readers read the article consistently by changing the spelling to match the rest of the article.
yearLinkFix year linkThis link points to a different year than the one shown in the text. Help readers avoid confusion by updating the link to match the displayed year.
convertReferenceClarify referenceThis plain link reference can be converted into a structured reference with more information. Help readers trust the information by generating a properly formatted reference from the link.

Done

  • Document desired copy changes in Requirements
  • @Quiddity to review the doc and document any copy/link revisions/additions
  • Editing Eng. to implement copy changes specified within the T415849 - Suggestions copy doc
NOTE: this task is only about changes we think need to be made BEFORE the initial en.wiki beta feature release. We will refine the copy in T414987.

Event Timeline

ppelberg updated the task description. (Show Details)

I've shared the new Suggestions copies proposed in the task's description, following the new copies structure proposed in T414987.

Link to a specific pageThis link may point to a general page. Help readers find the right topic by linking to a more specific page.

I don't think we should avoid the terminology "disambiguation" and replace it with "general". While "disambiguation" is a little confusing, it is widely used within Wikipedia and introducing a new term for it could me more confusing.

We don't need "may" - we know it definitely links to a disambiguation page.

I think we also need the "more" qualifier in the title "Link to a specific page", as a disambiguation page is already a specific page, it's just less specific than the targets :)

Link to a more specific page
This link points to a diambiguation page. Help readers find the right topic by linking to a more specific page.

externalLink Edit external link External links should not appear in the body of an article. Help readers stay focused on the content by removing or relocating the external link. Edit link

As the description indicates, the primary action should be "Remove link". If the users wants to relocate the link instead they would do that by cut and pate, not by opening the link editor, so having that as the option is not very helpful.

Skip

I think "skip", especially on mobile, does not convey the destructive nature of pressing it. Specifically that the suggestion will go away and never be shown again in that edit session. "Skip" suggests to me that I may be able to come back to it, whereas I think "dismiss" is clearer in that regard. Other options might be "Ignore" or "Decline".

Redirect link

This doesn't follow the rule of using action-oriented titles. I'm not sure if we need to be 100% rigid on that though...

Help readers reach the intended article directly by linking to the final target.

Fixing the redirect link doesn't acutally help users get to the right place as the redirect already works fine. The fix maybe helps editors, or readers who hover on the link to look at the page title, but maybe for this one we just leave out the reason as it's a bit too technical?

Fix year link | Fix link

There are actually two fix buttons of equal priority for this suggestion as the user has to work out which of the link target or the link label is correct:

image.png (207×310 px, 12 KB)

I would guess that 90% of the time it's the label that has been updated without updating the link target, but we don't want to offer the incorrect fix for those other cases.

addReference Add a citation

As we aren't using separate copy for check mode and suggestion mode yet, updating this would change check mode as well. I'm ok with that but we should be aware...

Patch updating the copy is here: https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/VisualEditor/+/1235795

It adjusts everything from the table apart from addReference and convertReference.

We've implemented all copy changes needed ahead of the en.wiki Beta Feature deployment.

We'll refine the copy ahead of translating via T414987
