Background
As part of T415589, we explored placing the Suggestions ON/OFF toggle within the mobile edit toolbar. Given the current space constraints, this would require moving the Cite and Link actions into a + (Add) menu in order to free up space for the Suggestions toggle.
| Current edit toolbar | Proposed updates |
This task is to conduct a usability testing to evaluate whether this updated toolbar structure:
- remains clear and efficient for editing tasks,
- preserves the discoverability of key actions like Link and Cite,
- and provides a good overall experience when introducing the Suggestions toggle in the toolbar.
The goal is to validate whether this approach is viable as part of the Suggestion Mode experience, or whether UX adjustments are needed before moving forward.
Decisions to be made
- Is moving Link and Cite into an Add (+) menu acceptable and understandable for users on mobile?
- Does the proposed edit toolbar layout on mobile maintain quick access to the most important editing actions?
- Is the Suggestions toggle discoverable and easy to understand in this new position?
- Does this solution introduce friction or confusion compared to the current toolbar?
Usability testing findings
Access to main actions in the toolbar
- The toolbar is perceived as simple and easy to scan by both newcomers and experienced users.
- Strong mental model for “+ Add”, clearly understood as “add content”. All users expected additional “add” actions (e.g. images, tables) to be available within this menu (T385851).
Link & Cite under “+ Add”
- Overall, the pattern is understandable. All users successfully found and used both options without noticeable friction.
- Cite fits naturally within the “+ Add” menu. However, Link is a highly frequent action and may benefit from being promoted to a first-level position instead of being nested under “+”.
Suggestions ToggleButton
- The ToggleButton is highly discoverable and well understood. However, its prominence may compete with primary actions while editing. We will find alternative places for the ToggleButton on mobile in T415589.
- Contextual Tooltips (T417827) reinforce understanding when turning on/off suggestions.
Based on findings commented above, we will consider the following in T400903:
- Move Link to first-level, keeping Cite under “+”
- Expand the “+” to more options (T385851)
- Rebalancing the prominence of the Suggestions ToggleButton T415589
- Find a more recognizable icon for the "Publish" button
