Conduct usability study: Mobile edit toolbar improvements
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Background

As part of T415589, we explored placing the Suggestions ON/OFF toggle within the mobile edit toolbar. Given the current space constraints, this would require moving the Cite and Link actions into a + (Add) menu in order to free up space for the Suggestions toggle.

Current edit toolbarProposed updates

This task is to conduct a usability testing to evaluate whether this updated toolbar structure:

  • remains clear and efficient for editing tasks,
  • preserves the discoverability of key actions like Link and Cite,
  • and provides a good overall experience when introducing the Suggestions toggle in the toolbar.

The goal is to validate whether this approach is viable as part of the Suggestion Mode experience, or whether UX adjustments are needed before moving forward.

Decisions to be made

  1. Is moving Link and Cite into an Add (+) menu acceptable and understandable for users on mobile?
  2. Does the proposed edit toolbar layout on mobile maintain quick access to the most important editing actions?
  3. Is the Suggestions toggle discoverable and easy to understand in this new position?
  4. Does this solution introduce friction or confusion compared to the current toolbar?

Usability testing findings

Access to main actions in the toolbar
  • The toolbar is perceived as simple and easy to scan by both newcomers and experienced users.
  • Strong mental model for “+ Add”, clearly understood as “add content”. All users expected additional “add” actions (e.g. images, tables) to be available within this menu (T385851).
Link & Cite under “+ Add”
  • Overall, the pattern is understandable. All users successfully found and used both options without noticeable friction.
  • Cite fits naturally within the “+ Add” menu. However, Link is a highly frequent action and may benefit from being promoted to a first-level position instead of being nested under “+”.
Suggestions ToggleButton
  • The ToggleButton is highly discoverable and well understood. However, its prominence may compete with primary actions while editing. We will find alternative places for the ToggleButton on mobile in T415589.
  • Contextual Tooltips (T417827) reinforce understanding when turning on/off suggestions.
NOTE: No major friction was observed. Users were able to complete tasks successfully, but some initial exploration was needed (especially for Link).

Based on findings commented above, we will consider the following in T400903:

  • Move Link to first-level, keeping Cite under “+”
  • Expand the “+” to more options (T385851)
  • Rebalancing the prominence of the Suggestions ToggleButton T415589
  • Find a more recognizable icon for the "Publish" button

Acceptance criteria (or Done)

  • Conduct usability test and analyze results
  • Decide on what (if any) adjustments will we make to T415589 and T400903

Moving this to a future sprint as work on this will resume when Bárbara returns.

I’ve completed the usability testing conducted with 7 participants (3 newcomers, 4 experienced editors) and here are the main takeaways (more info in the slides with findings and insights):

Access to main actions in the toolbar
  • The toolbar is perceived as simple and easy to scan by both newcomers and experienced users.
  • Strong mental model for “+ Add”, clearly understood as “add content”. All users expected additional “add” actions (e.g. images, tables) to be available within this menu (T385851).

We could find alternative places for the ToggleButton on mobile in T415589.
  • Contextual Tooltips (T417827) reinforce understanding when turning on/off suggestions.

Summary: No major friction was observed. Users were able to complete tasks successfully, but some initial exploration was needed (especially for Link).

Next steps: Based on findings commented above, we will consider the following in T400903:

  • Move Link to first-level, keeping Cite under “+”
  • Expand the “+” to more options (T385851)
  • Rebalancing the prominence of the Suggestions ToggleButton T415589
  • Find a more recognizable icon for the "Publish" button

Assuming we move forward with introducing the Suggestion Mode Toggle (💡) into the toolbar via T420419, how are you thinking we will create space for the 🔗 button to be visible within the toolbar (as opposed to being housed within the + menu)?

@ppelberg the insight collected about the Suggestion ToggleButton is:

The ToggleButton is highly discoverable and well understood. However, its prominence may compete with primary actions while editing. We could find alternative places for the ToggleButton on mobile in T415589.

The key question here is whether we want the Suggestions ToggleButton on mobile to be prominent and easily discoverable, or whether we should explore a less prominent placement.

From the usability testing, the current placement clearly achieves its goal: users consistently noticed the ToggleButton and were able to turn suggestions on/off without any issues. However, one participant did mention that its prominence could compete with other primary actions in the toolbar.

So before deciding how to accommodate the rest of the toolbar options, I think we need to clarify the intended priority of the ToggleButton in the overall hierarchy. This will directly inform whether it should remain in its current position or be moved to free up space for more core editing actions.

Mmm, well put, Bárbara and agreed! I've added this question to T400903.
