Automatic translation renders "Turkey" as "Peru" ignoring entity context (Q43)
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Automatic translation renders “Turkey” as “Peru” even when the context clearly refers to the country (Q43). The translation engine ignores entity context.

This occurs in MediaWiki automatic/interface translations, not in Wikidata labels (which are correct). The issue appears to be caused by word-level translation without semantic disambiguation between the country (Q43) and the animal.
This issue appears to have existed for many years and affects Portuguese translations.

Event Timeline

For context here, the Portuguese word for Turkey is Turquia, but the Porgueuse word for turkey is peru, and the Portuguese word for Peru is Peru. Names of countries are capitalised in Portuguese.
