Improve Wiktionary Contributor Experience by Providing Inline Entry Templates
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Problem description

When adding a new word on Wiktionary, contributors need to follow a language-specific entry structure to ensure consistency. Although templates for these structures exist, they are hosted on separate documentation pages and are not directly accessible from the edit interface.

This forces contributors to leave the edit page, navigate to another page, manually select the template, and copy it back into the editor. This workflow introduces unnecessary friction, breaks editing context, and increases the likelihood of mistakes or incomplete entries. New contributors, in particular, may struggle to identify the correct structure or required sections, leading to inconsistent entries across languages.

Overall, the current process makes adding new words more complex than necessary and can discourage contributions.

Feature summary (what you would like to be able to do and where)

Allow contributors to easily access and reuse language-specific word-entry templates directly within the Wiktionary edit interface, without requiring navigation to external documentation pages.

Use case(s)

  • A contributor attempts to add a new word on Wiktionary.
  • They look for guidance on the required entry structure for the language.
  • They are redirected to a separate template or help page.
  • They manually copy the template and return to the edit page to paste it.

Underlying problem:
The lack of inline, copyable templates within the edit interface disrupts the editing flow, increases effort, and leads to errors or inconsistent formatting—especially for new contributors.

Benefits
Lowers the barrier for first-time and occasional contributors
Reduces errors caused by manual copying
Improves consistency of entries across languages
Encourages more contributions by simplifying the editing workflow

Event Timeline

Hi, which Wiktionaries was this tested with? What is an example (full link) for a "template for these structures"? What is an example (full link) for a "separate documentation page"? Was the task description written with some AI?

Thanks for the questions — happy to clarify.

This was something I encountered while attempting to add new entries on Punjabi Wiktionary (Punjabi Wiktionary).

This shows the page of a word that does not yet exist, where I attempted to add a new entry. On the edit page, no entry template or structure is provided.

This shows the separate page that the “template/help” link points to. While the information is useful, it requires navigating away from the edit interface and manually copying content from another page.

The underlying issue I encountered is that contributors must leave the edit page, find the appropriate structure on a different page, and manually copy it back. This breaks the editing flow and makes it harder—especially for new contributors—to create consistently formatted entries.

Regarding Description:
The task description was written by me based on my experience while contributing. I did use an AI tool to help refine the wording for clarity, but the issue itself reflects a real workflow problem I encountered.
