Design Research support for WP25 Peak 3
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Please provide all the following information:

Context & Description

The WMF Communications team and WMF apps teams request support from the WMF Design Research team to source qualitative feedback from potential users around the WP25 Peak 3 experience, intended to drive downloads of the Wikipedia app when officially launched later this year (anticipated in April or May). See the Peak 3 project brief.

Research Goals

Set up one or more unmoderated usability tests on Userlytics in which participants are asked to interact with one or more Baby Globe animations and potentially follow embedded links to the relevant app store in order to provide the project stakeholders with qualitative insights about the ways in which Baby Globe and its forthcoming animations do or don't engage and interest potential future users. The insights emerging from this limited study will directly inform the form and direction of future iterations of this concept.

An early example of what the Baby Globe animated experience may look like can be found here.

Expected Deliverable
A series of user videos depicting users interacting with Baby Globe for the first time, as well as a limited research report summarizing findings from the corpus of recordings.

Estimated Effort

Low effort, requiring 2 weeks of partial researcher time for setup, analysis, and reporting.

Priority
High priority and impact for the WP25 campaign to promote downloads of the apps.

I need this task resolved in:

1 month. (The research insights need to be delivered by the end of February at the latest)

For use by WMF Research team; please leave everything below as it is:

Event Timeline

Hi Brooke - I spoke with Mike about this research request that you'd discussed with him.

While we wish we could support every study request we get, due to the small size of the Design Research team, we aren't able to set up and conduct this study. We do not do usability testing except in rare cases where it's a high-risk change. Designers have been taking on usability testing, when it is necessary - so that would be an option here, to have the Apps designer do this usability test. The other option is we can point you to resources for how to set up and run a usability test on Userlytics (the platform we use for unmoderated usability testing) yourself.

I also want to flag to you that Jazmin made a research request related to WP25 Peak 3 to me last week -- see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T416935. Jazmin was not aware of this request - were you aware of Jazmin's? I have an open question to Jazmin (see end of the description text section) that maybe you could help answer.
