Enable editors to bulk label watchlisted items based on some criteria
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Watchlist labels have been received well, with one notable criticism being that users with large watchlists find it difficult and time consuming to add labels to large numbers of pages at once. Special:EditWatchlist is paginated, displaying up to 500 pages at once, and at the time of writing has only a namespace filter.

Other ideas have been suggested to support bulk-labelling based on some criteria. Please feel free to add to the list:

  • All pages the user has created
  • All articles in a given topic area
  • Pages within a given category

This task is a placeholder for collating and discussing these ideas. How such a feature would be exposed to users is unclear.

I wonder if, rather than looking at this from the point of view of labelling, we should think of adding more search capabilities to Special:EditWatchlist. Whatever the search results are, people will be able to assign or unassign labels, but also remove from their watchlist. It might be more flexible.

I like this idea, it's similar to T401274, which got tested out as a tool.

Would T416172 allow users to pass a list of article names into the search bar? If not, I'd suggest a feature similar to plain text editing of the watchlist itself: edit a label, paste a list into a text field and save it.
