Motivation
We've heard feedback that the gray bar is distracting to users and sometimes prompts users to quit their session because it is "annoying". Recent instrumentation (screenshot below), shows only a few hundred clicks to the banner links (as opposed to ~20k accounts created per day). So we know that temporary account users are not finding this to be a major nudge to create registered accounts.
In light of all this, we are considering removing the gray bar entirely and instead displaying temporary account names just as we display registered user names.
This task is to explore design options for indicating to the user that they have a temporary account without the gray bar.
