Request creation of azwikimedia VPS project
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Project Name: azwikimedia

Developer account usernames of requestors: nmw03

Purpose: Tech infrastructure for Azerbaijani Wikimedians User Group. I am a board member.

Brief description: We are a recognized Wikimedia affiliate (Azerbaijani Wikimedians User Group). Following the recent election of our new board, we are setting up technical infrastructure to support our programs and community coordination.

We request a CloudVPS project to host:

These services will directly support our Wikimedia outreach activities and internal governance. We intend to use our official domain (wikimedia.az), which is controlled by the affiliate.

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: this week

Event Timeline

Hi, per https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LimeSurvey we offer https://wikimediafoundation.limesurvey.net/
Why would you want to duplicate (?) the existing installation?

Meta-Wiki page says it is not possible for volunteers to create a survey there and:

At the moment, there is not a way to request setting up a community survey on https://wikimediafoundation.limesurvey.net/ but the Wikimedia Foundation Global Data and Insights team looks forward to exploring options to make this available in the future.

Hi @Nemoralis, did you try asking the foundation directly?

From https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Survey_Support_Desk

The Global Data & Insights team can be contacted via surveys@wikimedia.org if you have a request for survey tooling support.

Hi @Nemoralis, did you try asking the foundation directly?

Hi, no I did not. But this project will not only be used to host only these two things, it is expected that in the future it will also be used to host the software tailored to the needs of the user group.

Sorry about the slow process @Nemoralis. There are a few issues that I see with your request.

  1. The email and survey issues seem like things that are best managed by existing managed infrastructure. I'd encourage you to check in with other affiliate orgs and see how they are getting their needs met. I don't have any strong objection to you running these things yourself in the near term, but things like this have a tendency to become essential yet unsupported and then fall onto cloud-vps staff to maintain.
  1. We do not typically approve umbrella projects that are associated with teams/people rather than with particular technology. This is due to a similar long-standing issue with abandoned projects and VMs. Some details of that can be found at https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Cloud_VPS_project#Reviews_of_Cloud_VPS_Project_requests

So, those aren't a strong 'no' but instead encouragement to reconsider. If you're sure you need a project to manage email correspondence and similar communication, and the project will be limited to those features, then we can probably approve it.

@Andrew, thank you for the answer. Yes, I am sure that we need a project to manage the communication infrastructure and the project will be limited to this only. Also, if we talk about the maintainership, I am a board member (for the next 2 years) and I will handle these things as a Communications Officer. That is, I will remain a maintainer for at least 2 years, of course, after 2 years this will not be abandoned, there is a possibility of re-election or transfer to a user who will carry out this position in the next board.

Can I get a status update until the weekend, please? I want to work on this during weekend

So -- I reiterate that I don't think a cloud-vps project is the right way to handle things like this. If I were solving the issues you're solving, I would definitely look for a hosted service rather than building my own infra from scratch, and I would start /that/ process by talking to other affiliates and asking how they are solving the problem.

That said, we have no technical objection to the request, so +1 from me if you really want the pain for yourself :)

@Nemoralis Last check, after reading what @Andrew said, you still want the project?

@dcaro, yes please. I still want to go with building my own infra from scratch, I am OK with that

dcaro changed the task status from Open to In Progress.Mar 9 2026, 5:33 PM
dcaro added a project: User-dcaro.
dcaro moved this task from To refine to Doing on the User-dcaro board.

Done :), don't forget to subscribe to the email list https://lists.wikimedia.org/postorius/lists/cloud-announce.lists.wikimedia.org/ (low traffic) where you'll get announcements of maintenance windows and other events that might affect your project.
