[SPIKE] Tallying page views for media files
Open, MediumPublic5 Estimated Story PointsSpike

Description

Description

Media files on Commons are used across wikimedia projects, sometimes appearing on many pages per project. Therefore, looking at the actual file page within Commons does not provide a fully accurate view of how many times the file has actually been viewed.

Conditions of acceptance

  • Determine if there is a scalable/sustainable way to count page views across distributed file usage.

Implementation details

Commons currently has a mechanism that tracks usage across Wikis. See a recently featured photo as an example, where references are listed across other wiki projects and languages: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20200222_FIS_NC_COC_Eisenerz_PRC_HS109_Men_Manuel_Einkemmer_850_4588.jpg

You may be familiar with https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_Impact_Metrics , but figured I'd drop the link here. Marcel is the person who's done the most on that piece; is occupied ATM, though, heads up.
