Possibly related or the same issue as other flaky Cypress tests we have, though I haven’t found a task that looks like the same issue, and I’ve now seen the same exact error several times here.

Strangely enough, I don’t even see the actual error in the console, just the HTML output. But the screenshot seems to confirm that it’s the same error as before (can’t find [data-v-app] .wikibase-wbui2025-edit-link).

We can also see in the HTML that the .wikibase-wbui2025-edit-link is present, but the data-v-app attribute is missing from the <div class="wikibase-wbui2025-statement-section" data-section-key="statements" data-props="P6"> tag. Which still makes me think that the Vue mounting is failing for some reason, but I have no idea why. (Also, at this point – three months in – it starts to be feel suspicious indeed that this only seems to affect this one test. What’s so special about this test?)

And again. Can we disable this test until a solution is found? Two months seems long enough as a grace period to "just" fix it directly.

Seconding this request. The CI system should be reliable, but it hasn't been lately and this is one of the reasons.

wikibase.entityPage.entityLoaded called with: [entity JSON which looks normal at a glance]

wikibase.wbui2025.entityViewInit state is error

So something in entityViewInit is failing, sufficiently visibly that ResourceLoader can see it and mark the module as an error, yet Cypress is not failing the test (and instead just waiting for an element that will never appear); remains to be investigated what’s wrong, how to fix it, and also how to make any such errors visible to Cypress. (Just guessing: it’s probably not an uncaught exception because ResourceLoader catches it? And I thought Cypress would treat any console.error() call as a failure [and also ideally mirror it to the console so we can darn well see it], but that might not be true at all.)

I’m thinking we want to override or instrument mw.trackError() (which RL calls when a module has an error) to make the error visible to Cypress; just throwing an error might not work (because it’s caught again), but something like Promise.reject( msg ), triggering an uncaught promise rejection, might work? (Assuming Cypress registers a window.onunhandledrejection handler.)

(I’m about to sign off for the day so I just wanted to write this down in case it’s useful ^^ otherwise I might have time to look into it tomorrow.)

Progress! PS2 of this change failed in CI with the following screenshot:

TypeError: Cannot read properties of null (reading 'getElementsByClassName')

There aren’t a whole lot of getElementsByClassName calls to go around; I think we’re looking at this one in serverRenderedHtml.js, where it’s just called on the element passed into importFromElement(), which in turn is called in entityViewInit.js like so:

(That said, I have no idea why document.getElementById( 'wikibase-wbui2025-statementgrouplistview' ) would sometimes return null – we can see a <div id="wikibase-wbui2025-statementgrouplistview"> in the console-logged HTML – and fixing the condition in entityViewInit.js won’t fix the error, it’ll just result in a different message, as far as I can tell.)

To debug flaky tests, I usually run them 10-100 times.

for i in $(seq 1 10); do VERBOSE=1 ./run_selenium_tests extensions/Wikibase; done

The above line will take several hours. To avoid the machine going into sleep.

This is just me thinking loud.
After skipping the failed test, the next stable test in the same context fails, which might indicate there might be an issue with the setup logic:

I'm confused. Cypress does not create any log files, besides videos and screenshots?

For the above job, I'm looking at log folder, but the only thing I see is Wikibase folder with videos and screenshots.

I'm looking for something like xml files that webdriverio creates. Example: WDIO.xunit-2026-07-03T06-49-01-096Z-bec408b2.xml from quibble-with-gated-extensions-selenium-php83/42924.

Can we please actually understand what is wrong instead?

For instance, in both of those builds, the screenshot shows the same error:

(uncaught exception) TypeError: mw.error is not a function

which is a simple oversight (presumably mw.log.error was meant) that we should fix.

Also, we’ve already skipped the test that this task was originally about (“tabular-data qualifier”). And as mentioned in T418778#12045015 T418778#12058921, the only effect of that has been to shift the failure to the next test (“geo-shape”). Which is now failing in exactly the same way, except with none of the debug output, because all the debug output that we added to try to make sense of this error is in the test which is now skipped. So we’ve just made it harder to figure out what’s actually going wrong, without actually making the test any less flaky.

For the record – this is still the latest state of my understanding of this confounding issue:

  • in wbui2025 entityViewInit.js, const wbui2025StatementList = document.getElementById( 'wikibase-wbui2025-statementgrouplistview' ) returns null
    • therefore we never initialize wbui2025 and never mount the Vue app
      • therefore the [data-v-app] part of the CSS selectors in the browser tests never matches, making the browser tests fail
  • and yet, when we log the HTML contents of the test page in an afterEach() hook, we see an element with that ID in the HTML, plain as day
    • it is completely unclear how this can happen

Also, as far as I can tell, this error appears to be confined to CI: I can’t find any similar errors (the mw.error one should be pretty obvious, and possible since wmf.8) in mw-client-errors.

I think we might need to add some more debug code to entityViewInit.js itself – we’ve seen the HTML at the time of the afterEach() hook, but maybe it looks different whenever ResourceLoader runs our module? (Even though it really shouldn’t, AFAIK.)
