Onboarding: Languages Screen
Closed, ResolvedPublic3 Estimated Story Points

Description

Background

Wikipedia's strength is its breadth across languages, but users will only benefit from that if the app knows which languages they want to read in. Confirming language preferences during onboarding ensures the explore feed isn't limited to a single language by default, which is especially important for multilingual users. Additionally, users have reported being confused with how we recommend the first set of languages, this screen should provide clarity. Before completing onboarding, users should have the opportunity to confirm or update the languages they want to read Wikipedia in.

User Story

As a new user, I want to confirm the languages I'd like to read Wikipedia in, so that my explore feed surfaces content in the right language(s).

Requirements

  • ✅ Users should be shown the languages detected on their device, with their primary language clearly labeled. They should have the option to add or edit languages, which navigates them to the existing language settings screen.
  • Language preferences confirmed here should be saved and used to configure the explore feed.

-✅ If a user continues on from this step, they land on "Follow your interests" in their primary language

  • If a user navigates away from the App before continuing still save their langauge preferences

Event Timeline

@JTannerWMF, since this is the last screen, we don't need the skip button.

If the reader taps "Add to, or edit your languages," they can customize their language
If the reader taps "Get started", they automatically accept what we have in that screen and move on (equivalent of skip). Please let me know what you think before I add the Figma here. Thanks.

@HNordeenWMF @JTannerWMF had to remove the "get started" button and use the "arrow symbol" instead due to space constraints - I needed to add the ellipsis so users can navigate to previous steps. Please let me know if any issues.

Hi @TLessa-WMF and @HNordeenWMF

Would it be possible to adjust the flow a bit, which moves this language selection flow after/before the initial onboarding screens (Welcome and the Data & Privacy)?

From the existing flow, the language selection is the first screen in the initial onboarding flow, and this makes more sense when for the interests selection screen, where users can select interests based on their primary language.

Hi @TLessa-WMF

This is ready for design signoff now. Please download the APK below and enable the initialOnboardingEnabled in the Developer settings to see the implementation, thanks!

Looks great, thanks for updating it so it works with all screen orientations.
