Background
Wikimedia Commons features a daily Media of the Day — one freely licensed audio or video file selected each day for display on the Commons Main Page. A unique aspect of this feature is that captions are intentionally published to allow the community to translate them into other languages, reflecting the collaborative, multilingual spirit of the Wikimedia movement. Surfacing this in the explore feed gives readers a more dynamic and varied content experience beyond static articles and images.
User Story
As a reader browsing the Community Picks feed, I want to see the media of the day from Wikimedia Commons, so that I can discover freely licensed audio and video content curated by the Wikimedia community.
Requirements
- The module should display the title "Media of the day" with the subtitle "One freely-licensed audio or video file selected each day by the Wikimedia Commons community"
- The module should display the media at full card width with a play button overlay and duration indicator in the bottom right corner. If playing within the feed is greater than an XL, there is room for opening media in a separate screen that isn't visually jarring
- Tapping the card should launch the media player inline or in a full screen player
- A caption describing the media should be displayed below the player
- A share icon should be accessible directly on the card
- The module should handle both audio and video file types gracefully, with an appropriate player UI for each
- The three dot more menu should be present on the module per the shared menu behavior (Task 2)
- Content should be sourced from Wikimedia Commons and should appear regardless of the user's selected language wiki
- Tapping the card should launch the media in our existing full screen player
- Add into Settings in its correct order: Featured Article, Top Read, Did You Know, Today's Featured Picture (from the language), In the news, On this day, Picture of the day (from Commons), Media of the day (Commons)
