Request creation of etherpads3 VPS project
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Project Name: etherpads3

Developer account usernames of requestors: bd808, tkarcher

Purpose: Object storage for one or more Toolforge tools that archive etherpad.wikimedia.org pads. Per https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Object_storage_user_guide#Toolforge this requires a dedicated Cloud VPS project because of the quirks of the object storage gateway.

Brief description: Work has begun on solutions to support archiving etherpad.wikimedia.org pad data prior to a change of policy that will see pads become more ephemeral than they have historically been (T415237). https://etherpad-backup.toolforge.org/ has archived over 8000 pads, but it is using Toolforge NFS as the storage backend. @bd808 would like to try moving that storage to an S3-compatible bucket so the tool can be detached from NFS for better long term stability.

How soon you are hoping this can be fulfilled: soon'ish, please and thank you.

I see a missed opportunity of calling this s3th3rpad :P

More seriously, can we call it "etherpad-s3" instead, or "etherpad-backup-s3"? I would like to avoid ending up with n projects all with the same "s3" prefix.

Call it whatever works best for y'all. deploymentpreps3 is a similar project that I am currently a maintainer of. It feels likely that s3 will become a common prefix or suffix unless people are steered towards a different prefix/suffix like "objects" or "storage".

I will say that putting hyphens in the project name makes my brain hurt, but mostly because I still think of the project name as the primary key and I know that the S3 gateway we use does not allow hyphens in names.

etherpads3 without the hyphen is also fine, but I personally find etherpad-s3 easier to read. I thought we fixed all the issues with having hyphens in the project name... What is the "S3 gateway" you mentioned?

@komla is now on clinic duty and will take care of the project creation once we settle on a name. @komla ping me if there are some parts of the process that require any permissions you don't have.

Yes, no punctuation in project names please!

@fnegri Noted. I successfully created projects in the past so I don't expect any missing permissions.
