Article Guidance: Automatically connect new articles to Wikidata items
Open, In Progress, MediumPublic4 Estimated Story Points

Description

As part of Article Guidance (T396029), editors indicate which subject their new article is about. In some cases users are able to select the specific Wikidata item that they are creating an article about. However, after the item is published, the new article needs to be connected to Wikidata as a separate process.

This ticket proposes to automatically connect new articles to Wikidata items when they are published as part of the Article Guidance process. This applies only when the user indicated the specific Wikidata item the article is about. In this way:

  • The system will be aware that the topic is already covered in the current wiki (reducing chances of duplicates)
  • Multilingual readers will be able to discover the other language versions of the article.

Recent feedback by a user:

Honestly, automatically connecting articles once published would be very beneficial, even for myself, as I've seen users (including myself once or twice, I will admit) create articles and not connect them because either they forgot to do it or they don't know that part of Wikipedia exists. I will suggest if you do that though, consider possibly adding something to remind patrollers to check if the article is linked correctly, in case original creator accidentally connected it to the wrong thing.

I am not sure this is working as expected.

For this article in FR wiki: "Oulad_Boubker" created using article guidance on July 7th. There is no Wikidata item linked. And when trying to write this article with AG, it does show a wikidata item.

I've checked some other items and it seems there is no automatic tagging of the wkidata item, it shows users adding the tag.
