Cursor hovering over notification/watchlist icons prevents UI state updates
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue:

This issue is intermittent and may be difficult to reproduce on all environments.

  1. Use Google Chrome on Windows 11.
  2. Log in to an account with active notifications.
  3. Navigate to any article (e.g., enWP or ruWP).
  4. Click the notification icon (the box button) in the top-right header.
    image.png (53×43 px, 465 B)
  5. Keep the cursor stationary over the icon after clicking.
  6. Observe that the notification list fails to drop down. This is the bug.
  7. Move the cursor away from the icon; the list should then appear immediately.

Or:

  1. Click the star icon to add the article to your watchlist.
    image.png (42×44 px, 736 B)
  2. Keep the cursor stationary over the icon after clicking.
  3. Observe that the star fails to move or get painted black.
  4. Move the cursor away from the icon; the star should then move and get painted black immediately.

What happens?

The notification dropdown and the watchlist star animation/colour change does not trigger as long as the cursor remains in a hover state over the element. The UI appears "stuck" until the mouse is moved.

What should have happened instead?

The notification list should appear immediately upon clicking, regardless of whether the cursor remains over the icon. Same for the star.

Evidence provided by the reporter, Jet Jerry, on ruWP.

Environment:

  • Browser: Chrome (confirmed NOT happening in Firefox or Edge).
  • OS: Windows 11.
  • Hardware: 3 GHz CPU, 8 GB RAM.
  • Skins: reproduced on both Vector 2010 and Vector 2022.

Troubleshooting:

  • The issue does not occur in safe mode.
  • However, it persists even when the user disables all gadgets and clears personal scripts (common.js/css, global.js/css).

This suggests a possible conflict with a site-wide script or a specific Chrome-MediaWiki interaction that safe mode bypasses.
