Upload Wizard: categorisation apparently fails when using the wizard's dialogue
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

For my uploads on 2026-04-05 and 2026-04-06 (see Special:ListFiles/Grand-Duc) that I processed using the Upload wizard, all files ended up with {{Uncategorized}}, despite me having added some categories in the wizard dialogue. I made sure to add "Category:UploadWizard" for the last example at [[:File:2026-04-06 Assistent zum Hochladen von Dateien mehrere Dateien – Wikimedia Commons.png]], but it still ended up without any category: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F75190280. I had to add it manually afterwards.
The same holds true for my uploads yesterday (and for the hedgehog today). I added the scientific names of the organisms depicted, but to no avail.
I feel some urgency here, as ''Uncategorized'' maintenance categories are ballooning anyway, and needlessly adding workload doesn't sit right with me.

Event Timeline

@Grand-Duc I wonder if you are being mislead by the new interface? It certainly confused me, at first.

Could you make a screen-capture video or at least a series of still images, showing your workflow?

I was able to reproduce this with a local development setup of Mediawiki with UploadWizard installed.

@Amdrel Could you outline what steps you took ?

@Soda My apologies, I retract what I said earlier. After testing again to create the steps I noticed that I missed that it got added to the right category. I must have glanced over it.

@Grand-Duc were you able to reproduce?

At the moment, I don't have photographs on hand that I'd deem suitable for our projects (going by motifs and quality) and/or suitable for testing (= handily categorizable), so I couldn't try other uploads yet, sorry.
If this ticket needs closure, what is the procedure if I happen upon a similar phenomenon in the future? Opening a new ticket and referencing that one here?

Regards, Grand-Duc

Thanks for following up! If something similar happens again, I think it's fine to open a new ticket with whatever relevant information you have, and someone can investigate.

If nobody else here has recent examples, we can close this ticket.
