[EPIC] Visual Design Language
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Background

The product design team is leading an evolution to Wikimedia's product visual design language, for which guidelines are documented on MediaWiki.

This EPIC serves as the place where tasks related to evolving the visual design language are documented and completed.

Goals

With a unified and evolved visual design language, our primary goals are to find more consistency, cohesion, and connectedness across Wikimedia projects and the systems used to build them.

Process

In order to maintain as much connectedness between interfaces, we will attempt to conduct visual design updates in OOUI at the same time we do them in Codex, but we understand that depending on the task, updating each of the systems together might need to stagger in completion. Additionally, for the Android and iOS apps, appropriate tasks for those teams to update will follow updates to Web projects.

DTorsani-WMF moved this task from Backlog to In Progress on the Codex board.

Is it just an oversight or is it more of a telling omission that these new guidelines feature only one sentence on web accessibility, and there is no subsection committing designers to build (or at least strive to build) interfaces which are also accessible to everyone?

The only honourable mention of it: To meet accessible standards, changes in shape, weight, and iconography reinforce what color implies, ensuring that a status, warning, or selection is never conveyed exclusively by hue.
