Background
iOS does not allow app developers to automatically add widgets, or deep link to the widgets menu. The current reading challenge implementation does not have a permanent home in the app, so if someone misses or misunderstands the widget announcement or does not know how to add a widget then they may join the challenge, but never see the baby globe streak tracking.
We've heard staff efeedback that confirms this
- "Wiki app offered me the globe and I said ok but then it didn't download. Too many steps! Now I can't find it again. No way to get the pop up back or even find globe baby"
- I also experienced this -- I fell out of the flow and was looking to try the challenge from e.g. my activity tab but can't find a way to do it
- The prompt on the Wikipedia app asked me to sign in (which I did) > I hit "Got it" got it on the widget screen > @hnordeen helped me realize that I need to manually install the widget on iOS (26.4.2) > Tried that but I only see black squares/rectangles. [I'm using an iPhone 16]
- 1 report of an IOS user not knowing what/how to engage at all with widgets
Two user problems have been identified:
- Users not understanding what the modal is asking / thinking it’s automatic
- Users seeing the announcements but forgetting / not acting and then not being able to re-trigger or find anything about the challenge in the app
Requirements
- Within the "Join challenge announcement, move "install the widget" up to 1st position in the overall announcement & update copy to match copy doc
- Update copy within the Widget install prompt to match the copy doc
- Add barebones permanent entry in Activity with baby globe, text, and CTA to learn how to add the widget.
- Link out to FAQ on how to install videos as primary CTA. External browser is acceptable
- Show to logged-out & logged-in users
- [Nice to have] Show active red dot on Activity tab until people tap in [Ends for new users and existing users on June 19]
