Problem
We would like to understand how the Wikimedia Attribution Framework site (currently hosted in Toolforge at https://wikimedia-attribution.toolforge.org) is being used, so we can make informed decisions about its information architecture, content, and developer guidance.
Desired outcome
We'd like to rely on a solution from our data platform infrastructure to easily access user-friendly usage data that allows us to understand the site engagement.
We'd hope analytics can help us answer questions such as:
- How much daily traffic does the site receive over time?
- Which pages/sections are most visited?
- Are users clicking important external links, such as API documentation, the API sandbox or feedback links?
- Are users interacting with the attribution configurators?
Options to consider
- Toolforge's Toolviews API: Provides basic usage data for Toolforge sites, such as daily request/traffic trends. We might need more detailed behavior information than what Toolviews can provide.
- Use Wikimedia’s Matomo/Piwiki instance: Matomo could provide more detailed site analytics, including page-level views, referrers, and outbound link clicks. This option may be more appropriate, since we need to understand how users navigate the site and whether they engage with key content or actions.
Acceptance criteria
- Confirm whether the Attribution framework site is eligible to use Wikimedia’s Matomo/Piwik instance
- Identify what data would be collected through Matomo, such as pageviews, referrers, outbound link clicks, or custom events
- If Matomo is approved, add any required tracking configuration to the site
- If Matomo is approved, set up access to analytics dashboards for the Attribution Framework's stakeholders
