Description

Quota increase requested for project osmit. OpenStack Browser

ResourceCurrent limitIncreaseNew limitΔ%
Volume Storage (GB)350+310660+89.0%

Reason: We need a 400GB volume to host an instance of Overpass API for the italian area to serve free geographic data, given the low reliability of the global instance

Cookbook command:

cookbook wmcs.openstack.quota_increase --cluster-name eqiad1 --project osmit --gigabytes 310

Event Timeline

I'm not finding the initial project creation task, so asking here instead. How are these services relevant to the Wikimedia projects?

WMCS has an ancient and largely locally undocumented tie to OpenStreetMap projects. The connection comes from a OpenStreetMap-Wikimedia cooperation that included OpenStreetMap tools/servers being part of the Toolserver environment. When Toolserver was disbanded some of the OSM projects came to what we now call Cloud VPS. See also osmwiki:Collaboration with Wikipedia which talks about some of this.

As for Overpass, for which this request was made, it's one of the most used tools to extract geographic data from OpenStreetMap and it helps many Wiki editors, tools (like WikiShootMe), bots and templates (like the authority file in the Wikidata infobox) to find geografic elements representing or related in some way to wikidata items (or wiki pages) for editing, visualization and QA purposes. It's also used for Wikimedia related research (example) and external tools (like OSM-Wikidata Map Framework). The global instance is currently too unstable to be reliably used as it's failing to handle the heavy hammering by bots and scrapers, so the italian community has expressed the need for a stable instance to get this data for the italian area.
