While testing the roadmap feature, I noticed that the current roadmap progression for becoming a “small wiki” may not align well with existing Wikimedia definitions of small and large wikis, which may have been overlooked during the product design phase. See T423407#11946404.
Right now, the UI shows the following progression:
10 articles
50 articles
100 articles
500 articles
1000 articles
🏅 Small Wiki
According to Wikimedia definitions documented here, a small wiki is:
- More than 50,000 articles, but with 10 admins or fewer
- More than 10 admins, but with fewer than 50,000 articles
- Fewer than 50,000 articles and with 10 admins or fewer
Since many communities who will be invited for the pilot are already established small wikis, the roadmap may not feel very meaningful or motivating for them.
Perhaps we could consider milestones that better reflect the actual progression of Wikimedia small wikis, for example:
- 1,000 articles
- 5,000 articles
- 10,000 articles
- 25,000 articles
- 50,000 articles
- 10 admins
- 🏅 Small Wiki
This could also help address cases where the roadmap currently shows negative numbers because the wiki has already surpassed the configured thresholds. For example for the Test Wikipedia T422864#11942604: -3290 articles · -273 admins away from Small Wiki
