Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):
- Visit English Wikipedia in iOS Safari
- Click 'Search' at the top
- Type "Ralph’s"
- (Don't press enter -- instead, look at the compact list of results that appears in a dropdown-like fashion)
What happens?:
- All results shown are for people named Ralph
What should have happened instead?:
- The first result shown should be the article about the grocery store (Ralphs)
Details:
- Because this is iOS, a curly apostrophe is typed instead of a straight apostrophe.
- There's a redirect from "Ralph's" (with a straight apostrophe) to "Ralphs". However, there isn't a redirect from "Ralph’s" (with a curly apostrophe), and non-administrators cannot create it (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ralph%E2%80%99s&action=edit shows a permission error that links to MOS:STRAIGHT).
- iOS users generally aren't aware that they are typing curly apostrophes or quote marks, aren't aware (and shouldn't need to be aware) that Wikipedia prefers straight variants, and don't know how to type straight variants.
The search feature should treat curly inputs as if they were straight inputs, ideally completely, but at least for matching the titles of pages and redirects.
