Feedback summary from the Starter Kit MVP trial

We reached out to 25 active admins across 22 small wikis. Written feedback came in from four communities: Nias (Slaia), Igala (AgnesAbah), Tyap (Kambai Akau), and Batak Toba (Gazartashlomo0907). [Pannonian Rusyn (Keresturec) also responded, off-wiki.]

What worked

• Tyap completed the "Translate or create an essential article" task end to end and published A̱sukuru.
• The sections admins called out as most useful:
  • Activity and growth tracking, and the Next milestone counter (Igala, Tyap)
  • Community Connections, described as valuable because smaller communities often need guidance from more experienced contributors (Igala)
  • Essential article recommendations, which give new editors a clear starting point instead of having to find gaps themselves (Igala)
  • Recruit Editors & Native Speakers, specifically the Telegram, WhatsApp and Facebook sharing (Tyap)
  • Having tools like Translatewiki reachable without opening separate tabs (Batak Toba)

Blockers

• Machine translation is missing or unusable in these languages. Nias has no MT support at all, so landing on Content Translation adds no value over translating manually. Batak Toba has MT, but the output is described as poor and unnatural enough that the community does not recommend it.
• Templates and infoboxes are the most repeated pain point. Three of four communities raised it. Nias reported that templates are often not present locally with no visible import mechanism, and made a broader argument that reinventing templates per language is wasteful, suggesting template identity be separated from the local template name (Wikidata-style). Batak Toba asked for a way to access important templates and sub-templates adaptable to each wiki. Igala asked for more automation around creating important templates. Worth noting: the import-infobox tool already exists as an advanced task, and two of these admins did not find it. This is a discoverability problem as much as a feature gap.
• Permissions block task completion. Tyap could not install HotCat or fully install infoboxes because both require importing CSS, which needs interface admin rights. A one-time access request was filed by the admin.
• Dashboard statistics appear to lag. Tyap reported that New Editors and Articles Created vs Deleted look stale while the milestone counter is accurate. This is likely the known gap where the dashboard cannot pull the current month, but it reads as a bug to users and needs either a fix or a visible "data through [month]" label.

Feature requests

• Open the mentor list to all registered usernames instead of a curated list, so people can reach out to contributors they already know (Igala)
• Automatic import of templates and CSS, or a button to request an import, so admins are not blocked on interface admin rights (Tyap, Nias)
• Local keyboard support, referencing the Tyap tilde built by Amire80 (Tyap)
• Find and replace across multiple articles to fix orthography inconsistencies (Batak Toba)
• Expose the list of 1000 basic articles directly so it can be used for manual translation (Nias)
• More guidance on identifying content gaps and recommending articles to create or translate (Igala)

Suggested follow-ups

• Make the essential article task branch on MT availability and quality, so wikis without usable MT get the article list and a from scratch path instead of Content Translation.
• Surface required permissions on each task card before someone starts it, and raise the visibility of the import-infobox tool.
• Add a data recency label to the analytics cards.
• Track the template portability question against T424197 rather than solving it inside the Starter Kit.
