Description

User story & summary

As a logged-out mobile web user on any Wikimedia Foundation wiki, I want easy access to account creation and login options from the page header so that I can quickly create an account or log in without navigating through multiple menus.

Background

The mobile account menu experiment introduced a user account icon in the mobile header for logged-out users, providing direct access to "Create account" and "Log in" actions.

The results were clear and positive. Users who saw the new account menu were approximately 25% more likely to create a permanent account than those who saw the existing experience. This far exceeded our goal of a 2% increase, and the result was statistically significant, meaning it's very unlikely to be due to chance.

Given these results, this task will roll out the feature to all Wikimedia Foundation wikis on mobile web.

Acceptance Criteria

AC1

Enable the mobile account menu experience for logged-out users across all WMF wikis.

AC2

Logged-out users see a user account icon in the mobile header that provides direct access to "Create account" and "Log in."

AC3

The rollout preserves the existing experience for logged-in users with no functional changes to their account menu.

AC4

Feature flags, experiment code, and temporary instrumentation used exclusively for the A/B test are cleaned up as appropriate.

Note from backlog refinement: For now, we will keep both the mobile menu icon and the options to log in or create an account within the hamburger menu. We may revisit this decision in the future as we evaluate navigation changes as part of the DE1.3 (Dashboard) work.

For Tech News:

As part of the [https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Contributors/Account_Creation_Experiments Account Creation Experiments], the Growth team tested adding an account icon on the Mobile web experience. This resulted in an increase of 20% of account creation on mobile. Starting $date, this icon will be deployed to all wikis.

Release date: no preference. This is an important move for mobile users that won't impact any known workflow.

I've marked this as a deploy blocker for now since it is meets the criteria in https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Deployments/Holding_the_train#Major_stylistic_problems_affecting_all_pages but defer to Growth Team if that makes sense.

All links seem to work though some icons are broken, so I don't spot any functionality regression.

Noticed the issue - did not report it since it seemed to be only browser emulator specific (even mentioning it in the comment to another phab task - my mistake).

Checked testwiki wmf.9 - the issue is fixed.

I just wanted to note that I updated the task description to add a link to the final experiment report:

We allowed this experiment to run until June 28th (long after we first reached a significant p-value and when I originally wrote this task). During that time the metrics shifted slightly from when I first posted results. There was a shift from 20% relative increase in mobile account creation to a 25% relative increase in mobile account creation.

Wow, that experiment won so hard. Thanks for the big win for account creations!

This has been announced and all major issues resolved. Any issues related to this can be filled as a follow up ticket.
