Bug: Over a thousand saved pages in Reading Lists completely disappeared on iOS app
Open, MediumPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Open the Wikipedia iOS app.
  • Log into an official Wikipedia account with "Sync reading lists" enabled.
  • Go to the Reading Lists section.

What happens?:
All of my reading lists—containing over a thousand carefully curated pages—suddenly disappeared from my iOS app for no reason.

What should have happened instead?:
My reading lists and all saved pages should be visible, safely stored, and synced correctly.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):
[8.2.0 (6087)]

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):
*Device: [iPhone 13 Pro Max]

  • iOS Version: [iOS 26.3.1 (23D8133)]
  • Note: I recently noticed that one of my lists had disappeared. I suspected that my other lists might also disappear in the same way, but I couldn't find a solution. Yesterday, my biggest fear came true. I first sent an email to ios-support@wikimedia.org, but I haven't received a response yet. This sudden data loss has resulted in months of time and effort being wasted. It's extremely frustrating and undermines user trust. A platform as large as Wikipedia shouldn't make such a critical mistake. If this critical error isn't investigated and my data isn't restored, I'll have to stop using Wikipedia.

I'm not sure if this will help solve the problem, but I'll add this: This happened spontaneously without any action being taken, and the "Synchronize reading lists" setting was always on. When I restart the app, the loading progress bar at the bottom appears for a few seconds at halfway through and then disappears.

Event Timeline

Hello @Lock46! I'm going to try and get someone from the iOS team to take a look at this, but in the meantime - is there any chance this has to do with you being logged out? It's odd that one single list would be removed, but we'll definitely look into it

I'm experiencing this problem even though I'm logged in. I've logged in and out of the account multiple times, but it hasn't worked. I even accessed Wikipedia through a web browser, and when I went to the "saved pages" section, nothing was there. Initially, a single list disappeared; I should mention that this was due to a bug. I initially deleted an unnecessary list, but Wikipedia didn't recognize the command and it wasn't deleted. I tried deleting it again, and this time it worked. But then, a list that shouldn't have been deleted disappeared. A week later, I logged into the application and realized all my lists were gone.

@Lock46, so sorry you're experiencing this! To help us investigate what happened, if you're willing, it'd be helpful if you could share your database contents (which will contain reading history, etc.). To do that, from within the iOS app go to Settings → Help and feedback → Export user data. You can send that file privately via email (it's a zip archive) to ios-support@wikimedia.org.

@Lock46, some good news! I believe we've been able to restore your reading lists, and have rolled out a fix to prevent this from happening to other users. Let us know if you are still not seeing them. Apologies again you had to experience this!
