ULS rewrite: How can readers discover pinned languages?
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Description

Pinning languages (T416512) works, but nothing in the reading or switching flow reveals it exists, it's only reachable via the three dots → Language settings → third tab. This task explores organic discovery surfaces: pinning offered at moments of real intent

Follow-up to T416512.

Potential ideas
  • Search - A reader searches for a language, given article may or may not exists, this can be our moment to nudge user to consider it for pinning.
  • Section header - a quiet "Pin your own" / "Edit" affordance on the suggested / preferred section title, exactly where ping render.
  • Missing-languages banner - Show edit affordance onto missing languages panel.
Notes
  • This is not for Logged-out readers
  • Every prompt intent to be quiet, dismissible, and triggered by the reader's own action

Event Timeline

Previous task for that is T301787: [Design spike] Explore options for one-click language switching.

I came to suggest something similar, but even quicker. There seems to be space available both in Mobile and Desktop versions directly next to the language selector. If I could place buttons that would change to my other preffered language, that would be great. See mockups (the buttons are the red text, I am no designer, this is just the placement):

If I selected more languages that there is space for, the last would not be shown, or something like that.

As a reference, such a feature was once proposed as part of Desktop Improvements (Vector 2022) but discarded in May 2022.
