Portals could be for different levels of geographical entities (e.g. New York, United States, The Americas) or for thematic areas (e.g., Recent deaths, politics, sports, culture).

This could mostly be done by category (e.g. Category:2026 in science), but other modes might be useful too, like determining from wikidata or wikiproject tags (T374761).

Narrow geographic or thematic areas might be more suitable for at a later stage incorporating user-generated original reporting (particularly for a New York portal).

Benefits (why should this be implemented?):

Many readers will be most interested in following a particular area, such as their country or topic of interest.

It will also just provide a larger and more interesting space to browse around, comparable to the different sections of a traditional newspaper or news site.
