Background
Phase 1 of redesigning the Explore feed into a modern, 2-tab experience was completed on Android in May/June 2026. In Phase 2, the team will introduce new content sources into the feed: seeking more curation sources from the community, additional personalization, and engagement opportunities.
Usability testing ranked Creator Videos third for return intent (avg. 2.44/5). Videos will be served from Wikimedia Commons; a separate spike covering Commons upload enablement is already underway and should be treated as a prerequisite for this task.
User Story
As a Wikipedia reader, I want to watch short creator videos related to Wikipedia topics in my Community feed, so that I can quickly learn about subjects I'm interested in without having to read a full article.
Requirements
Prerequisite: Comms uploading videos
- The module surfaces 3 daily creator videos from Wikimedia Commons, associated with Wikipedia articles or topics (see T431764)
- Only available to readers who have English configured as a language in their feed
- Each card displays a video thumbnail
- Tapping a card launches the existing media viewer for playback, containing image caption, and licensing information, share icon, & overflow
- Ideally: video auto-plays
- User can swipe left/right to advance to the other daily videos
- Attribution requirement from Legal: explicitly attribute content to the Wikimedia Foundation to distinguish it from community-generated content.
- Provide a link or tile for the Wikipedia article mentioned in the video (either on initial feed module, or within media viewer)
- The module refreshes daily with new videos from Commons (randomly select from batch of 30-50 for experiment period)
- Content must not repeat within the module on a given day
- Three-dot menu options: Hide card, Hide module
- Add module into settings screen
- Test against existing feed as an A/B test
- Instrument the module to answer A/B test metrics in partnership with product analyst
- Feed order: Featured Article · Creator Videos · Top Read · Did You Know · In the News · On This Day · Picture of the Day
