Description

The Attribution API includes a call to action prompting users to download the app. Today, the Google Play store as a default, hard coded string because there is no existing location where dynamic app download links are generated and returned based on mobile operating system. The main area where store specific download buttons are presented is on the main Wikipedia.org landing portal. However, the layout of that page bumps the mobile app buttons to the bottom of the page, after a large section about other Wikimedia properties, limiting their discoverability and causing user confusion.

While we might be able to pre-scroll the page, viewers would then lose the Wikipedia context, especially in the mobile view:

With this pre-scrolling approach, the Wikipedia context is lost entirely, which would be confusing for users. We should therefore move the location of the app store buttons, so that they are visible on mobile form factors when the mobile responsive version of the portal page is returned. We may also consider updating the layout of the web view so the app download buttons are more easily discoverable, but that is less urgent as they are less relevant in that context.

NOTE: This is a fallback plan, assuming T419775: Add Special:MobileAppRedirect to MobileApp extension for app store redirection is not complete. However, this work may be done anyway to more actively promote the mobile apps downloads, independent of which path we take for attribution specifically. This also replaces the approach outlined in T423737: Attribution API: Dynamically return 'download_app' response based on requesting OS.

Conditions of acceptance

  • Rearrange the mobile view of the wikipedia.org portal, so that the app store buttons are always visible on first load (DESIGN PENDING)
  • [Maybe/Stretch] Update the standard web browser view to make the app download buttons more discoverable
  • Update the link returned in the download_app call to action within the Attribution API to use the primary portal page. --> this can be a separate ticket, if preferred.

OPEN QUESTIONS

  1. Who actually owns this page?
  2. How is this page deployed?

Example Screenshots
A few rough mocks for the mobile presentation are below. These are placeholders for now, to frame discussion and clarify the idea, but should not be treated as the source of truth until they go through design review.

  1. Option 1: Download buttons appear after the promoted language options. A risk is they may still get cut off for smaller devices/screen sizes.
    • image.png (804×1,842 px, 216 KB)
  2. Option 2: Download buttons appear immediately after the logo, before the search and promoted language options. These are guaranteed to appear for all screen sizes, which is a benefit, but may negatively impact users who expect the search instead.

Adding extra context here, shared by Rita (who supported the initiative at the time): https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T135441

So a small issue - the App badges are only on https://www.wikipedia.org/

we have also other pages like www.wikiversity.org or www.wikivoyage.org - and the Attribution handler works there. If Attribution has to redirect to this page, then probably instead of redirecting to https://www.wikipedia.org/ or www.wikimedia.org - it should redirect to the specific project portal page, but then this page doesn't have the app.

The lack of app pages is by design. The app is specifically a Wikipedia app; not a Wikimedia app.

I would suggest that we add logic to the Attribution API to make it so the "download_app" CTA is only returned for Wikipedia projects. Would you mind adding a ticket to that effect in the hypothesis?

what can be easily achieved is to move the apps container above the list of projects. Right now, phone users see something portal like that:

The easiest and fastest patch would be to change the order of footer elements:

IMHO, it's also the least invasive method.

Perfect. That proposal of rearranging the footers seems totally reasonable. Let me do a final confirmation of that design with the UX folks, then should be good to go!
