translatewiki.net: translation support for https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/operations/software/mailman-templates may be dropped due to inactivity

Description

translatewiki.net provides translation services for this project. As part of our annual activity audit (T383652), we semi-automatically check whether supported projects are still actively developed.

Our supported projects requirements include:

🛠 Active maintenance: To maximize the impact of our translators' efforts, we require regular availability of translations to users (at least annually, but more frequently is preferred) and integration into your version control system at least once a quarter.

Our audit found that https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/operations/software/mailman-templates has not had an upstream (non-translation) commit in over 12 months. Based on this, we are considering dropping translation support.

If this project is still active, please let us know — we'd love to continue supporting it! A brief update on the project's status and plans would be appreciated.

I don't think https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/operations/software/mailman-templates is related to IA Upload

https://github.com/wikisource/ia-upload is not in active development but is still in use.

Thanks for the reply, Sam. In my ticket creation spree, I went "off by 1", and made incorrect tags. Thanks to Pppery for fixing the Phab tags.

Hi, I'm not sure if this is a good case. The repo is basically there to hold translations and then we push those to mailman servers. So by nature it should be only translatewiki commits and nothing else. That being said, we push the translations to the server. I'm not sure if it's automatic.

Can you please check? I'm mainly concerned about translator effort not being honored. If it doesn't happen automatically, I could of course create a ticket to request CI/CD for them.

I can't find where these templates are pushed to the servers. Maybe they belonged to mailman2 and then got removed in in https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/operations/puppet/+/716077 ? @Legoktm sorry to ping you but do you remember how this works or whether it's needed from top of your head?

Okay, I looked at it a bit. It's not pushed directly but it's packaged as a debian package and then pushed. It is for mailman3 so it's needed but it basically gets deployed once every couple of years (the last entry in debian change log is for five years ago). I think it needs changing to be a bit more automated.

Not high priority, I guess. From a translator POV, I'd like to see more frequent deployments. Is quarterly achievable?

We'll have to look into the best way to set up automated packaging, this would likely involve migrating the package to GitLab. I'll get back to you with a plan in the foreseeable future.
