Add multilingual MediaInfo captions during upload
Open, Needs TriagePublicFeature

Description

Feature summary

Allow contributors to add multilingual captions (MediaInfo labels) for uploaded media during the Clip2Commons upload workflow.

Use case(s)

Captions provide a short, language-specific description of a media file and are an important part of Structured Data on Commons.

Currently, contributors who want to provide captions in multiple languages must:

  1. Upload the media using Clip2Commons.
  2. Open the uploaded file page on Wikimedia Commons.
  3. Open the Structured Data editor.
  4. Add captions individually for each language.
  5. Save the changes.

This additional workflow discourages contributors from adding multilingual captions, resulting in many uploaded files having limited or no language-specific descriptions.

Clip2Commons should allow contributors to enter one or more captions during the upload process and publish them as MediaInfo labels after a successful upload.

Benefits

  • Encourages contributors to provide multilingual descriptions during upload.
  • Improves accessibility for users browsing Commons in different languages.
  • Makes uploaded media easier to discover through multilingual search.
  • Reduces the need for manual post-upload edits.
  • Improves the completeness and quality of Structured Data on Commons metadata.

Hello! I am a new contributor and I would like to work on this task.

I am interested in contributing to Clip2Commons and would like to take this up as a learning opportunity. I will first understand the existing upload workflow, discuss my approach if needed, and then work on implementing the feature.

Please let me know if there are any suggestions or things I should keep in mind before I begin.

Thank you!
