Apps Visual Editor Handoff Instrumentation T431812

Dependencies where we still need to map how we will be joining our app data in event.editattempstep with MobileWeb/Visual Editor data generated by users coming from the apps are noted throughout deck, to be updated when we have more info.

@SNowick_WMF - scope question for the iOS instrumentation.

The choose-editor modal events are going through TestKitchen (apps-editing instrument, same as android), plus the previously missing EditAttemptStep abort (in the new VE modal dismiss button). All additive so far.

the same edit flows also fire older events to the iOS.edit_interaction stream (EditInteractionFunnel: edit pencil taps, edit source taps, cancel on the section/description dialog). This stream is iOS-only.
What do you prefer:

  1. Leave it as is
  2. Modify them if you need them shaped differently for the VE analysis
  3. Delete tem in a follow-up if you no longer consume that stream

do you still use ios.edit_interaction?

Separate small question: the instrumentation deck mentions funnel tracking.. Is that intended for these events or was it carried over from another section? (The TestKitchen is already setup to support it if needed)

Hi @EAlbizzati-WMF

  1. The older events should stay as-is, we do sometimes use that data in ios_edit_interaction . That does mean some events will be double-instrumented to send event to both streams but that should be ok.
  1. The funnel mention in that first slide is just the schema structure for reference, we won't be using any funnel tracking for Visual Editor.

iOS results for Beta release 6151-beta are very small but data looks good so far.

Validating event data for prod release 6169-r-2026-09-04

Also validating we are seeing shared app_install_id values in event.editattemptstep as engineered in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T432853
