As part of the Recommender System Audit & legal review it was recommended that we have a clear help doc that we can link to to supply more information about how recommendations are generated:
- We publicly explain how recommendations are generated and how options (if any) can be used, using plain language.
- That explanation includes the key recommendation parameters (e.g., recency, popularity, user behavior)
- The explanation is accessible directly from the interface or help section
Background:
The goal is to make recommendation systems more transparent and understandable without requiring users to understand the underlying technical implementation. The documentation should explain, in plain language, what factors influence recommendations, what users can do to influence or customize them, and where applicable, what limitations or caveats users should be aware of.
Acceptance Criteria:
- Work with product and engineering to draft and publish a Help page associated with the Home project page that covers the basics of how recommendations are populated. The documentation is reviewed with Product and Engineering to ensure it accurately reflects the current recommendation systems. The doc is also reviewed by Legal.
- Help doc should include clear details on any and all recommendations offered on that page. To start there should be sections for:
- Suggested Edits
- Daily Reads
- Review Changes
- Draft help doc is posted on MediaWiki. Incoming and outgoing links are added as appropriate. -> https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Home/Recommendations
- A follow-up engineering task is created to ensure the Help page is available from the relevant Home interface: T436863: Recommender Systems documentation should be linked from Home
