I would like to request support for Crotonese as a language/linguistic variety for Wikidata labels, descriptions and aliases.
Language/variety name: Crotonese
Wikidata item: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q135067360
Proposed language code: mis-x-croton (subject to maintainers' advice)
Script: Latin
Area of use: Crotone, Calabria, Italy
Crotonese is a documented local Romance linguistic variety spoken in Crotone, Calabria. It is documented both in specialist linguistic research and in works specifically devoted to its grammar and lexicon, including:
- Michele Loporcaro, Luciano Romito, Antonio Mendicino and Tiziana Turano, “La neutralizzazione delle vocali finali in crotonese: un esperimento percettivo”, in Pier Marco Bertinetto and Lorenzo Cioni (eds.), *Unità fonetiche e fonologiche: produzione e percezione. Atti delle 8e giornate di studio del Gruppo di Fonetica Sperimentale (A.I.A.)*, Pisa, 1998, pp. 91–100.
- Sebastiano Defonte, *Kroton. Storia, lingua, dizionario*, CSA Editrice, 2nd ed. 2020 (1st ed. 2016), 466 pp. The work includes sections devoted to phonological, morphological and lexical features of the local variety, as well as a Crotonese–Italian dictionary containing approximately 7,700 entries and more than 2,000 example phrases, idioms, sayings and proverbs. - Bruno Tassone, *Grammatica e dizionario del dialetto crotonese*, Calabria Letteraria, 2000, 492 pp. Bibliographic record: https://books.google.com/books/about/Grammatica_e_dizionario_del_dialetto_cro.html?id=GhEpGQAACAAJ
There is a concrete use case on Wikidata. For example, Crotone (Q6681: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6681) is called “Cutroni” in the local Crotonese dialect. The official website of the Municipality of Crotone explicitly gives “Cutroni in dialetto crotonese” among the forms of the city's name:
https://www.comune.crotone.it/novita/scheda-della-citta/
At present, however, it is not possible to store “Cutroni” as a Crotonese label because Crotonese is not available among the languages supported for Wikidata terms.
Crotonese does not appear to have its own ISO 639 code or registered dedicated IETF language subtag. I am therefore proposing mis-x-croton as a neutral private-use candidate, since mis is used for known but uncoded languages. However, I would be happy to follow the maintainers' recommendation if another Wikidata/IETF-compatible tag, or prior registration of a language/variant subtag, is considered more appropriate.
The purpose of this request is to allow real-world linguistic data to be modelled correctly on Wikidata, in particular local names such as “Cutroni”. This request concerns language support specifically within Wikidata and does not concern the creation of a separate Wikimedia wiki.
