Outreachy 33: Enable audio and video uploads in the Commons Android app
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Project title: Enable audio and video uploads in the Commons Android app
Brief summary: Currently, users cannot upload audio and video files directly from the Wikimedia Commons Android app. This project will extend the existing upload flow to support these media types, including media type detection, validation, upload progress and status handling, error handling, lifecycle support, tests, and documentation.
Uploading existing media files will be the focus of this project. Recording, editing, transcoding, subtitles, resumable uploads, and offline/background upload are out of scope.
Expected outcomes:

  • Detect supported audio and video files selected from the device.
  • Extend the existing Commons upload flow to accept supported audio and video formats.
  • Upload selected files to Commons with the required metadata.
  • Provide basic upload progress and status feedback.
  • Handle validation, upload failures, cancellation, and lifecycle-related edge cases gracefully.
  • Add appropriate tests and documentation.

Skills required/preferred: Android development with Kotlin, especially some experience with UI development, Android file/media handling and understanding of Fragment/Activity lifecycles.
Mentors: @Nicolas_Raoul @RitikaPahwa4444 @Neeldoshii
Difficulty Rating: Moderate
Microtasks: https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/labels/good%20first%20issue. Please let us know before starting any of these so that we can assign the issue to you.
Any other additional information for contributors: Our team is mostly available on GitHub to guide you, and that's also the primary platform where we communicate everyday :-)
NEW QUESTIONS
What WMF priority does this project align with? A Wishlist item? An Annual Plan objective?
The project addresses the wishlist item: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2017/Mobile_and_apps/Enable_video_uploads_from_Commons_mobile_app. This is a very common ask and similar feature requests were also raised on GitHub.

The project also supports the broader direction of the Annual Plan’s goals of fostering contributions.

Why are you proposing it? What needs are you aiming to meet? Is it for your Wiki chapter, your community, etc?

Audio and video are important parts of Wikimedia Commons, but the Commons Android app currently does not support uploading them. This project aims to close that gap and make it easier for mobile users to contribute directly from their devices. This will help foster contributions that include but are not limited to educational recordings, spoken Wikipedia files, music, oral histories, Wikimania talks, documentaries, and other freely licensed audio-visual knowledge.

What is the expected impact? What does success look like? How will this affect the needs you have identified?

Success means users can select a supported audio or video file, provide the required metadata, and reliably upload it to Commons through the app, with clear progress and error feedback.

Hi @RitikaPahwa4444 thank you for your proposal! It is under review and we will reach out to you if there any questions.

Hi @RitikaPahwa4444 a few suggestions: it might be helpful to provide some nuance on what aspects of Kotlin/Android development experience, knowledge and skills would be required. It would also be good to know if you expect the applicant to be familiar with some sort of Android release process or if that will be handled automatically by an existing commons app pipeline.

That said, we have reviewed your proposal and you are approved to submit to the Outreachy site: https://www.outreachy.org/communities/cfp/wikimedia/

The deadline for submission is September 11 at 4pm UTC.

Thank you!

Thanks @LGoto for these suggestions. I’ve updated the description to clarify the required experience. Releases are handled by the maintainers, so contributors do not need prior release-management experience.

Hi @LGoto, we would like to scope it audio/video upload instead of playback. I just noticed a pull request addressing playbacks, so that would mostly get covered before Outreachy begins: https://github.com/commons-app/apps-android-commons/pull/6954. Apologies, it was an oversight at my end.

If that works for you, I'll modify the proposal with the details while retaining similar scope and difficulty.

We've wishlist item for uploads too: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2017/Mobile_and_apps/Enable_video_uploads_from_Commons_mobile_app. The project remains aligned with WMF's goals as it fosters contributors via the app.

Thanks for the update @RitikaPahwa4444 that sounds fine. Please ensure that your submission to the Outreachy site reflects this change as well.

@RitikaPahwa4444 just a reminder to please add a link to WMF's generative AI policy in the "AI tool usage policy" section (on the Outreachy site). Thank you!

@LGoto, we added our project's AI usage guidelines, would that suffice? We'll standardize ours as per WMF's policy if required, but that requires some discussion with other maintainers too.

@RitikaPahwa4444 I did see that, thanks. Could you include both links? The WMF policy is quite general, but must be included.

Got it. I've included both the links and updated the proposal as discussed.

@RitikaPahwa4444 Great, thank you!

The Outreachy site is flagging this part of your proposal: "Number of people contributing to this project regularly: 1-2 people" - is that accurate? This is not asking about how many mentors you have but how many people in general are contributing on a regular basis. Even a broad estimate of your contributor base would be helpful. Thanks!

@LGoto, maybe it's the term "regularly" that is causing the confusion - I'm not sure if we could call the trends as regular. The initial count excludes maintainers - we have a few long-term contributors and several seasonal contributors. I have updated the response to 6-10. This includes the maintainers, long-term contributors and a few seasoned members who often review PRs and give their inputs.

@RitikaPahwa4444 sounds good, that seems reasonable.

Thank you for the updates! I've approved the project.

Hello! I would like to participate in the audio video uploads project. The good first issues list seems to be full right now. Can you recommend an issue that is available or do I have to find one on my own?

Please see the item "Microtasks" in the task description

Has the contribution period started? If not, then we recommend checking the contributing guidelines of the project. If I understand correctly, Outreachy records contributions only during the contribution period, so the microtasks are best left for that period.

Thanks @RitikaPahwa4444 for your help!

Yes, you are right as the contribution period has not yet begun. I know that the contribution period is the time during which the contributions are counted; therefore, I will be waiting for the contribution period to begin before I start performing my microtasks.

Until then, I will be busy familiarizing myself with the contributing guidelines and setting up the local development environment.

@PrinceYadav018 @RitikaPahwa4444 Please note that the contribution period does not start until October 5.

@PrinceYadav018 Kindly wait until that date to begin working on any tasks for this project. Mentors are busy preparing and are not obligated to respond until that time. Thank you!
