Goal
Let community members configure the Article Guidance redirect themselves.
Context
Redirection is controlled by these variables:
- ArticleGuidanceRedirectEnabled - enables both the red link and the entry point redirects
- ArticleGuidanceRedirectJuniorEditorsOnly - junior means fewer edits than ArticleGuidanceJuniorEditorThreshold (default 100)
- ArticleGuidanceRedirectEntryPointTitles - set to the local wiki's article wizard
- ArticleGuidanceRedirectRefererTitles - never used in production
- ArticleGuidanceRedirectRefererCategories - never used in production
Solution
Expose ArticleGuidanceRedirectEnabled and ArticleGuidanceRedirectJuniorEditorsOnly on Special:CommunityConfiguration.
Design
One section holding two checkboxes:
Guided article creation
These settings decide who is taken to the guided new-article experience instead of the standard editor.
- Use the guided new-article experience When enabled, following a red link to a missing article opens the guided experience. Editors who prefer the standard editor can switch this off for themselves in their preferences.
- Limit to newer editors This setting has an effect only while the setting above is on. When enabled, only editors below this wiki's newer-editor edit count get the guided experience, and everyone else keeps the standard editor.
Acceptance criteria
- Special:CommunityConfiguration lists an "Article guidance" form with one section and exactly the two checkboxes above.
- No other Article Guidance setting appears in the form. (As of writing this. It may change if other configuration is added concurrently)
- Where the on-wiki page sets a value, the redirect follows it.
- Where it does not, the redirect follows site configuration, unchanged from today.
- The articleguidance-enable user preference is offered only while the effective value of ArticleGuidanceRedirectEnabled is true.
QA plan
Test on a local wiki with Community Configuration installed and site configuration enabling the redirect.
- No config page: the form shows the site configuration values and the redirect still works.
- Enabled on-wiki: red link goes to Special:NewArticle, title pre-filled.
- Disabled on-wiki: red link goes to the standard editor, overriding site configuration.
- Junior gate on: editors below the threshold redirect, editors above it do not.
- Junior gate on but the main setting off: nobody redirects.
- The "Use article guidance" user preference appears only while the main setting is on.
- The main setting also governs the entry-point redirect, not just red links.
