Enable experiment on beta and test wiki

Description

Background

The reading-recommendations Home module ("Daily reads") is off by default. Enable it on the Beta Cluster so it can be tested end to end with real CirrusSearch results and QA'ed.

'wgGEHomepageReadingRecommendationsEnabled' => [
      'default' => true,
],
'wgGEHomepageReadingRecommendationsFeaturedCategory' => [
      'default' => 'Category:Featured articles',
],

Note we've removed the first config flag and went entirely with ContributorsGrowth logic in the end. Also note, that Beta Cluster doesn't provide TestKitchen extension so experiment won't be visible there.

Acceptance criteria for done

Refer to
ReadingRecommendations.md in GrowthExperiments for the settings.

  • The module renders on Special:Homepage for a newcomer account.
  • Interest-based recommendations appear for a user with saved interests; general recommendations appear otherwise.

The featured-category value needs to be a category that actually has members on Beta enwiki. And wgGEReadingRecommendationsFixtureFile should stay unset there so real recommendations are exercised.

This is no longer working on beta or testwiki. I think it's because we removed the config variable and are relying on a method in GrowthExperiments that checks if the user is in the early onboarding treatment group (isEarlyOnboardingExperimentTreatment() in FeatureManager.php).

Per Slack this is still enabled but the URL has changed.

For test 2 wiki use: https://test2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Homepage?mpo=de-1-3-1-specialhomepage-onboarding-ab-test:treatment
For test 1 wiki it will only work with a new accounts since treatment is only triggered for user accounts registered after 9 September there: https://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Homepage?mpo=de-1-3-1-specialhomepage-onboarding-ab-test:treatment

Beta cluster doesn't have production test kitchen support so won't work. I recommend using patchdemos instead if you can.

For completion, we've expanded the documentation – including the special per wiki treatment.
