Steps to replicate the issue
- Go to a Wikipedia.
- Start typing the name of a user talk page in the search box.
What happens?:
- If the user talk page has no Page Image, the search interface shows the generic “missing image” placeholder.
- The placeholder used is the Codex icon: cdxIconImageLayoutFrameless
Refer to: https://doc.wikimedia.org/codex/latest/icons/all-icons.html
This placeholder is intended as a temporary stand‑in for pages that could have an image but do not yet have one. However, user talk pages are not content pages and are not expected to have images at all. They are communication pages, and showing a “missing image” icon incorrectly implies that the page is incomplete or that an image should exist. This is misleading and visually noisy.
What should have happened instead?:
Codex provides a dedicated icon for user talk pages: cdxIconUserTalk. This icon correctly represents the nature of the page and does not imply that an image is missing. If PageImages returns no image for a user talk page, the search interface should use cdxIconUserTalk instead of cdxIconImageLayoutFrameless. This provides a semantically accurate fallback and avoids suggesting that user talk pages should have images.
It also improves Accessibility by providing a recognisable visual cue for user‑talk‑related pages.
