Wikinewsie shouldn't use year categories for Wikipedia languages where they don't exist
Closed, ResolvedPublic3 Estimated Story PointsBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

What happens?:

No results appear in the Front Page feed, since Category:2026 (or its Wikidata counterpart) do not exist on Uzbek Wikipedia.

The 'Only in Category:2026' checkbox is checked by default, which is appropriate behavior for many language Wikipedias, but not for certain editions that lack that category entirely.

What should have happened instead?:

Wikinewsie should have detected that a counterpart to Category:2026 doesn't exist on this language Wikipedia, and the 'Only in Category:2026' checkbox should either be by default unchecked, should be grayed out, or should just not appear.

Software version (on Special:Version page; skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

Pharos updated the task description. (Show Details)

I think I actually overestimated how many Wikipedia languages lack 2026 categories. In fact uzwiki does have such a category, but something like aswiki does not. It's still a problem that needs fixing, just not as widespread an issue as seemed apparent at first.

Instead the issue in many cases is just the relatively slow pace of edits in certain languages and category intersections, which I've now sought to address with another feature request: T437956

So @Pharos is my commit or work no longer needed ?

No, it's still relevant and useful. See also the recent bug T438597.
