Description

As part of World of Wikipedia attribution exploration (T437867), we want to provide effective ways to participate in the Wikimedia movement.

Currently, World of Wikipedia shows at the footer an action to "Donate to Wikipedia".
Given the mobile audience of the game, this ticket proposes to provide a call-to-action about downloading the app.
As part of this exploration, we can consider how to present the action (e.g., reorganizing some of the options in the footer to increase prominence) and in which conditions (e.g., whether to show something different to users on desktop).

My proposal is to change the button copy to "Download Wikipedia App" (not "Download App" because it feels important to explicitly call out "Wikipedia" but feel free to disagree). Due to the long text in this footer only getting longer, I'm also suggesting changing "Privacy & Notices" to "Policies" and "Contact Us" to "Contact" but feel free to disagree on that as well. This would help leave more room for the main CTA to download the app, and give more breathing room to everything else, especially in other languages.

Functionality wise, the button would recognize what type of device is being used and automatically go to that app store. One question would be what should we do if this button is pressed on a computer? Should we leave this action as "Donate to Wikipedia" on screen sizes above that of a tablet?

Thanks for looking into this, @DTorsani-WMF. Sharing some comments below:

The proposal makes sense to me. The icons make the actions more prominent, and being an external game, it makes sense to mention Wikipedia explicitly.

The idea of cleaning-up the footer to make it less crowded makes sense, but I think we can consider going beyond shortening the labels (which is ok, but still presenting many elements for users to process). Maybe we can consider providing access to rules, policies and contact through a single "About the game" option which can contain the different contents. I think that someone looking for those contents would be able to identify an option like that as a likely path to find them.

I think it makes sense to have a different treatment for desktop and mobile. We need to consider:

  • The action for desktop. Some relevant options could be to: (a) provide a QR code for the user to install the app on their phone, or (b) keep the Donate to Wikipedia action (just for desktop).
  • The detection meschanism. Instead of screen size, we may want to base it on device detection. Note that iOS, and especially Android devices may come in a broad range of sizes. In addition, browser navigation on a desktop device may take place in smaller windows too.
