Add Community Configuration support for per-wiki talk page redirect
Closed, DeclinedPublic2 Estimated Story Points

Description

Allow communities to configure the local talk page used by Article Guidance's "Suggest a new type" link through Community Configuration.

T433483: Redirect "suggest a new type" to per-wiki talk page with localised message template changed this link from the MediaWiki.org project page to a per-wiki talk page configured by ArticleGuidanceFeedbackTalkPage. Currently, changing that target requires a mediawiki-config deployment.

Wikis with a configured Article Guidance page:

These existing values should remain the defaults unless a community explicitly overrides them on-wiki.

Expected behavior

Add ArticleGuidanceFeedbackTalkPage to the existing Article Guidance Community Configuration.

  • An on-wiki value controls the destination of "Suggest a new type".
  • Without an on-wiki value, use the existing site-configured value.
  • The configured value is a local wiki page title, not an external URL.

Implementation notes

T437586: Allow configuring redirects via Community Configuration introduced the Article Guidance Community Configuration provider in MediaWiki:ArticleGuidanceConfig.json and the dynamic-default mechanism for falling back to site configuration.

Add ArticleGuidanceFeedbackTalkPage to that provider rather than introducing a separate configuration mechanism.

Dependencies / prerequisites

Depends on the Article Guidance Community Configuration provider introduced in {T437586.}

No design, data migration, documentation, or coordinated deployment changes are expected.

Acceptance criteria

  • Article Guidance Community Configuration provides an option for the feedback talk page.
  • Changing it updates the destination of "Suggest a new type" without a deployment.
  • With no on-wiki override, currently configured wikis keep their existing destination.
  • Wikis without an existing configured feedback page retain their current behavior.
  • Existing Article Guidance Community Configuration settings continue to work.

QA plan

The main regression risk is changing an existing wiki's feedback destination unintentionally.

Automated testing

Consider covering the configuration precedence:

  • an on-wiki value overrides the site-configured value;
  • without an on-wiki value, the site-configured value is returned.

No additional UI test is needed if existing coverage already verifies generation of the "Suggest a new type" URL.

Manual testing

Use a local wiki or Patch Demo with Article Guidance and Community Configuration enabled:

  1. Set a feedback page through site configuration and leave Community Configuration unset.
    • Verify "Suggest a new type" uses the site-configured page.
  2. Configure a different page through Community Configuration.
    • Verify the link uses the new page.
  3. Remove the on-wiki override.
    • Verify the link returns to the site-configured page.

No production-only testing is required.

We're not sure about the future of the feature deployed in T433483: Redirect "suggest a new type" to per-wiki talk page with localised message template. It doesn't make sense to add a community configuration and then remove it later. We're putting this on hold until we have more clarity.
