news: URL protocol conflicts with News: namespace on de.wikivoyage.org
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

German Wikivoyage uses a namespace called News: . This conflicts with the news:// URL protocol, which is defined in $wgUrlProtocols by default and enabled on all Wikimedia sites.

The quickest resolution is to disable this protocol for dewikivoyage. Without doing so, many existing links are broken.

(It's been pointed out that this choice of namespace name is a bit odd since "News" is not a German word. The English word is however commonly used in German. Irrespective of the merits, there are lots of existing links to the "News:" namespace.)

Copying Erik's comment from patch review:

I suggest we

make the primary namespace name "Nachrichten" / "Nachrichten_Diskussion"
add an alias "News" / "News_Diskussion"
disable url protocol handler for news: til x date

that way we create a grace period for using the old namespace name in links, and can give them a time window to update links.

Does anyone really even use news: urls directly now a days? How many people would actually even have a program installed and setup that could handle such a url? I'd suggest doing Erik's plan, but just disabling news: urls permanently on that project instead of temporarily.
