Home pilot release: test end-to-end flow and verify translations on pilot wikis (DE1.3)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

User story

As a contributor on a pilot wiki, I want Home to work correctly and appear fully in my language, so that my first impression of the new landing page is a page I can understand and use, not a broken or half-translated one.

Background

The November pilot release of Home (Special:Home) replaces the Newcomer Homepage (Special:Homepage) as the landing surface for newcomers and editors with the Homepage preferences enabled. Three core modules ship to everyone: Suggested Edits, Your Impact, and Mentorship.

This is a pilot rollout, not an A/B test, so there is no control group. Every eligible user on a pilot wiki gets Home.

Before Home is enabled on pilot wikis, we need to: (1) QA the full flow for new and existing users, and (2) confirm all user-facing strings are translated for every pilot wiki language. Pilot wikis:

  • [TBD] enwiki
  • arwiki
  • frwiki
  • eswiki
  • bnwiki
  • zhwiki
  • viwiki
  • cswiki
  • bnwiki
QA: functional testing

Test on both desktop (Vector 2022) and mobile web (Minerva).

Page and access
  • Special:Home loads for logged-in users on pilot wikis in both skins.
  • Logged-out users get the intended behavior (no access)
  • A module that fails to render does not break the rest of the page.
Replacing Special:Homepage
  • Special:Homepage behaves as designed on pilot wikis
  • Existing users who had Special:Homepage enabled keep any migrated state (e.g. mentor assignment, task difficulty level).
New accounts
  • New account lands on Home after sign-up when not mid-action (editing or adding to a reading list).
  • Account creation via non-neutral entry points (mid-edit, reading list) returns the user to what they were doing, with no Home interruption.
Cross-cutting
  • No regressions to Special:CreateAccount or GrowthExperiments features on non-pilot wikis; non-pilot wikis still get the existing Special:Homepage.
  • RTL layout correct on any RTL pilot wiki
  • Accessibility: keyboard navigation, focus order, and screen reader labels work for all modules and the Suggested Edits settings.
Instrumentation check
  • Pilot instrumentation fires for page views and module interactions on both skins.
Check for translations
  • Confirm translations are complete for all pilot wikis, If any pilot language has gaps, ping the Growth Ambassador in Slack ASAP.
