I hope this is a false alarm... but it seems to be real.
Compare [[Locomotive]] (images visible - en is currently on 1.22wmf7) with [[testwiki:VisualEditor:Locomotive]] (no images - test is on 1.22wmf8).
Seen on Firefox latest and Chrome latest.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce this - was this a transient issue, or do you still get it, and if so, with what browser, and are there any error messages on the console?

And, of course, you told me that. Sorry! :-( Can't reproduce on latest master or in latest push of wmf8.
It seems to be mostly working again, although I couldn't see any images just a few hours ago.
I still can't see the first image on [[testwiki:Net]]. This just may be the Parsoid cache though.
Aha, I can now reproduce on that link - and looking at the HTML we get back from Parsoid, the first image comes back as
<meta typeof="mw:Placeholder" data-parsoid='{"src":"[[File:Net.jpg|thumb]]","optList":[{"ck":"thumbnail","ak":"thumb"}],"dsr":[0,22,null,null]}'>
… and so VisualEditor dutifully doesn't display an image. Marking as a duplicate of the Parsoid bug, even though that is higher-numbered. Sorry about this. :-(
