This doesn't seem to be a problem any more, even if I make the visual editor forget what math nodes are:
ve.dm.converter.modelRegistry.unregister(ve.dm.MWMathNode); ve.dm.converter.modelRegistry.unregister(ve.dm.MWAlienBlockExtensionNode); ve.dm.converter.modelRegistry.unregister(ve.dm.MWAlienInlineExtensionNode);
This might have been fixed by the same patch as T66625, years ago.
